Bedouin Culture at a Dubai Desert Camp: Coffee, Henna and Hospitality

By BashDubai Team · 9/29/2026

The meaning behind Arabic coffee, dates, henna, falconry and the traditional dress you'll see at a desert camp.

Desert camps near Dubai are modern places, but many of the things you experience there come from centuries of Bedouin life.

Arabic coffee (gahwa) and dates

Hospitality is central to Emirati culture, and coffee is how guests are welcomed. Gahwa is lightly roasted and flavoured with cardamom, sometimes saffron. It's served in small cups without handles, poured only a little at a time. Hold your cup in the right hand; when you've had enough, gently shake it from side to side. Dates are served alongside to balance the bitterness.

The majlis

A majlis is a sitting area with floor cushions and low tables where people gather to talk, share news and settle matters. Camps recreate it so guests can relax on carpets, just as families once did in tents.

Henna

Henna paste, made from a dried plant, has been used for celebrations such as weddings and Eid for generations. Designs are drawn on hands and feet and fade over one to two weeks. If you have sensitive skin, ask about natural henna and avoid "black henna".

Traditional dress

You may try on a kandura (the long white robe for men) with a ghutra headscarf, or an abaya and shayla for women. Learn more in our [Arabic headscarf guide](/guide/arabic-headscarf).

Camels

Camels were essential for travel, milk and trade across Arabia. Today camel racing and beauty contests remain popular. Read our [camel ride guide](/camel-ride-dubai) for what to expect.

Falconry

Falcons were used to hunt in the desert, and falconry is recognised by UNESCO as part of the region's heritage. Some camps offer the chance to hold a falcon on a gloved arm.

Being a good guest

Accept coffee when offered, dress modestly, and ask before photographing people. These small gestures are warmly appreciated.
