Evening Desert Safari Dubai: What to Expect

Pickup: 3:00–4:00 PM

Most operators collect guests from hotels across Dubai in the mid-afternoon. Pickup times shift slightly with the seasons — later in summer when the sun sets closer to 7 PM, earlier in winter when it sets before 6 PM. The drive out to the desert takes 45 minutes to an hour depending on your hotel's location.

Dune Bashing: 45–60 Minutes

Once you reach the desert, vehicles let some air out of their tires for better traction and the dune bashing begins. Drivers navigate a 4x4 up, down, and along the ridges of the dunes at varying speed — think of it as an off-road roller coaster. This is usually the most talked-about part of the trip, and it's included in every standard package rather than sold as an extra.

There's typically a stop midway for photos, where you'll get your best shots of the sunset over the red dunes.

Arrival at the Desert Camp: 5:30–6:30 PM

The camp is where the rest of the evening unfolds. Most camps are set up in a Bedouin-tent style, with seating areas, a stage for entertainment, and stalls for the additional activities. On arrival, you're typically offered dates, Arabic coffee, and a chance to relax before the activities start.

Activities at the Camp

• Camel riding — a short, guided ride around the camp perimeter
• Sandboarding — sliding down a dune on a board, similar to snowboarding
• Henna painting — traditional temporary tattoos, usually included for female guests
• Photo booths / falconry displays — offered at some (not all) camps
• Shisha — available at most camps, usually at an extra charge

If you've added quad biking to your package, this is typically scheduled before the camp portion, while there's still daylight.

Dinner: 7:00–8:00 PM

Dinner is served buffet-style and usually includes grilled meats, Arabic mezze, salads, rice dishes, and dessert, with vegetarian options available. Soft drinks, tea, and coffee are typically included; alcohol is served at select higher-end camps only.

Entertainment: 8:00–9:00 PM

As dinner winds down, live entertainment begins on the central stage. Standard shows include:

• Belly dancing
• Tanoura (a spinning folk dance)
• Fire show

Entertainment length and quality vary noticeably between operators — this is one of the areas where budget and premium safaris differ most.

Drop-off: 9:30–10:30 PM

Guests are driven back to their hotels once the show ends, wrapping up a 6–7 hour experience door to door.

Tips for Booking an Evening Safari

• Book at least a day or two in advance in peak season (October–April)
• Confirm whether quad biking and camel riding are included or extra
• Ask about group size — smaller convoys mean shorter waits at each stop
• If you get motion sick easily, mention it before the dune bashing starts
