How a typical evening desert safari unfolds
Most evening safaris run for about six hours. Pickup from central Dubai usually begins between 2:30 pm and 3:30 pm depending on the season, because the schedule is built around sunset — earlier in winter (sunset around 5:30 pm) and later in summer (around 7:00 pm). The drive to the desert edge takes 45 to 60 minutes along the Dubai–Hatta or Al Ain road.
At the meeting point drivers lower tyre pressure so the 4x4s can float over soft sand. This short stop is also when you can use a restroom, buy water and, if offered, arrange quad biking. Dune driving follows for roughly 30 to 45 minutes, with a stop on a high ridge for photos and sandboarding.
The group then reaches camp around sunset. Camps typically offer a short camel ride, henna, Arabic coffee with dates and traditional dress for photos. Dinner is a buffet of grilled meats, salads, rice and bread with vegetarian options, followed by performances such as Tanoura. Return drop-off is usually between 9:00 pm and 10:00 pm.
Morning and overnight variations
A morning safari starts early, around 7:00 to 8:00 am, and focuses on dune driving, sandboarding and a camel ride without the dinner and shows. It is shorter, cooler in summer and suits families with young children or travellers with an evening flight.
Overnight trips add sleeping at camp, a quiet night under the stars and breakfast at sunrise. They are best from October to April when night temperatures are pleasant.
How to prepare
Wear light, loose clothing that covers shoulders, closed shoes or sandals you can shake sand out of, and bring a light jacket in winter because the desert cools quickly after dark. Sunglasses, sunscreen and a scarf help against wind-blown sand. Eat lightly before dune driving if you are prone to motion sickness, and tell your driver if you would prefer a gentler route.
Dune driving is not recommended for pregnant guests, people with back or heart conditions, or very young children; these guests can still enjoy the camp by choosing a gentler transfer.
