Why the morning slot is the cooler, quieter option

Pickup runs between 8:00 and 9:00 AM, which puts you on the dune belt while the sand is still firm from the night and the air is fifteen degrees below the afternoon peak. Firmer sand means cleaner dune bashing lines and less tyre wallow, and the dune tracks are close to empty because most operators sell the evening slot. You are back at your hotel by about 1 PM with the rest of your day intact, which is why families with young children and guests flying out in the evening usually pick this one.

What the four hours include

The run starts with a tyre-pressure stop at the edge of the Lahbab red dunes, then thirty to forty minutes of dune bashing in a Land Cruiser. After that you get sandboarding on a shaded face, a short camel ride, and an optional quad bike session of thirty or sixty minutes. Refreshments, water and Arabic coffee are served at the camp, along with photo stops in traditional dress. Dinner is not part of the morning safari; that is the evening itinerary.

Summer versus winter mornings

From November to March a morning safari is genuinely pleasant, around 20 to 26C, and a light jacket is useful at pickup. From June to September we start earlier, closer to 6:30 AM, and shorten the outdoor activities because surface sand can pass 60C before mid-morning. Sunscreen, sunglasses and closed shoes matter more in the morning slot than the evening one, because you are out under a rising sun rather than a setting one.
