1. Dress light, dress smart
The desert is hotter than the city during the day and cooler than you'd expect after sunset. Cotton or linen shirts, loose trousers or knee-length shorts, and closed-toe shoes are the sweet spot. Sandals fill with sand in about ten seconds. If you're joining an evening safari between November and February, bring a light jacket or hoodie — temperatures can drop into the mid-teens Celsius once the sun disappears behind the dunes.
Women visiting from more conservative regions often ask about modesty: normal Dubai-appropriate clothing is fine at the desert camp. There's no dress code enforced, but shoulders and knees covered is the comfortable default.
2. Time your safari to the season
Morning safaris (7 AM pickup) are ideal from October to April, when the sun is gentle and dune bashing feels crisp rather than punishing. Evening safaris are the year-round classic — you get golden-hour photography, sunset over the dunes, and the full BBQ-dinner-and-show experience at camp. Overnight safaris are for guests who want to sleep under the Milky Way; November to March is the only comfortable window for those.
3. Eat light before pickup
Dune bashing is not gentle. The 4x4s carve steep angles, drop over crests, and slide sideways down slip faces. It's fantastic — and it's rough on a full stomach. Have a normal breakfast if you're on a morning safari, or a light lunch if you're going in the evening, and save your appetite for the BBQ. Motion-sickness tablets 30 minutes before pickup are a good idea if you're prone to car sickness.
4. Bring the right gear

5. Book with a licensed operator and confirm pickup
Dubai's desert tour market has hundreds of operators. Anyone can put a Land Cruiser on a website, but only licensed operators carry proper insurance, trained drivers, and DTCM permits for the conservation reserve. Ask about pickup: a real operator confirms your hotel, room number, and pickup window the day before. If they can't tell you which reserve they operate in or dodge questions about safety equipment, book elsewhere.
