Hatta Dam and the Wadi Hub, in practical detail

Hatta Dam is a narrow turquoise reservoir wedged between grey mountain walls about 90 minutes from Dubai. Kayaks, pedal boats and donut boats launch from a jetty on the near shore, and the paddle upstream to the far wall and back takes most people forty to fifty minutes. Next door, Hatta Wadi Hub adds mountain biking trails, a zip line, axe throwing and a freefall slide, sold separately by the hour. The water is calm and shallow near the launch, and buoyancy aids are mandatory for every paddler including strong swimmers.

  • Kayaks, pedal boats and donut boats at the dam jetty
  • Around 45 minutes to paddle to the dam wall and back
  • Wadi Hub: bike trails, zip line, freefall slide nearby
  • Buoyancy aids compulsory and included
  • Slots can be pre-booked to avoid the weekend queue

Heritage Village, the honey farm and the mountain road

Hatta Heritage Village is a restored mountain settlement with a defensive tower, a falaj irrigation channel and reconstructed mud-brick houses you can walk through in about forty minutes. The honey bee garden nearby explains how Hajar mountain hives are worked and sells jars pressed on site. Between the two, the drive to the Masfoot viewpoint is the part guests remember most: switchbacks, terraced wadi farms and a lookout that takes in the Oman border ridge.

When to go, and what to bring to Hatta

Best season is October to April, when daytime temperatures sit in the low twenties and the wadis still hold water after rain. Bring trainers or hiking sandals, a hat, at least two litres of water per person and a light jacket for winter mornings, when the mountains run several degrees cooler than Dubai. Phone signal drops in parts of the wadi road, so download your map before leaving the city. Weekdays are quieter than Fridays and Saturdays by a wide margin.
