How a dune buggy differs from a quad bike

A buggy is a seated, steering-wheel vehicle with a roll cage, four-point harness and suspension travel measured in tens of centimetres, so it soaks up dune faces that would bounce a quad rider out of the seat. You sit low, belted in, with a passenger next to you rather than behind you, which is why families and nervous first-timers usually pick a buggy over an ATV. The trade-off is that a buggy is wider and carries more speed, so we keep it to marked tracks and instructor-led convoys.

Driver requirements and passenger rules

Drivers must be 18 or over and hold a valid driving licence from any country; an international permit is not required for the desert track. Passengers can be as young as eight provided the harness fits properly and a parent is driving. Everyone wears a helmet. We do not allow driving under the influence, and guests with back, neck or heart conditions or who are pregnant should choose the camel ride or a shared 4x4 dune bashing session instead. Two-way radios keep the convoy in contact and a support vehicle carries water, a first-aid kit and recovery gear.

Where we ride and how long a session should be

Sessions run on the tourism-approved track beside the Lahbab red dunes, around 45 minutes from Downtown Dubai. Thirty minutes is enough for most first-timers because steering in soft sand is more physical than it looks; an hour suits confident drivers, and two hours only makes sense in winter. Book the last slot of the day if photographs matter, because the low sun picks out the ridge lines and cuts the glare off the windscreen.
