10 Common First-Time Desert Safari Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)
From wrong shoes to a heavy lunch before dune driving, the small mistakes that spoil a first desert trip.
Most first-timers have a fantastic desert day, but a few easy-to-avoid mistakes come up again and again.
1. Eating a big lunch
Dune driving rolls and tilts. A heavy meal just before pickup is the fastest route to motion sickness. Eat something light and save your appetite for the camp dinner.
2. Wearing the wrong shoes
Heels and new white trainers are a bad idea. Sandals or older trainers you can shake out work best.
3. Forgetting a layer in winter
From December to February the desert can drop to 12°C after dark. A light jacket makes the evening much more pleasant.
4. Not sharing the exact location
Many Dubai towers have similar names. Send a map pin for apartments and villas — see our [pickup zones guide](/pickup-zones).
5. Keeping the phone out during dune driving
You'll get shaky footage and risk dropping it. Enjoy the ride and film at the photo stop instead.
6. Not mentioning health conditions
Pregnancy, back problems and heart conditions mean you should skip dune driving. Tell the team so they can arrange a gentle transfer.
7. Expecting total silence
Most evening camps are social places with music and shows. If you want quiet stars, ask about overnight or private options.
8. No cash for extras
Quad bikes, photos and some drinks may be extra. Carry a little cash in dirhams.
9. Ignoring local etiquette
Dress modestly, ask before photographing people and avoid public displays of affection. It's about respect, and it's appreciated.
10. Rushing to book the cheapest option
Very low prices can mean overcrowded vehicles or rushed schedules. Read [real guest reviews](/reviews) and check what's included.
